How To: Mastering The Last of Us multiplayer

The Last of Us multiplayer is unlike any other and has become very popular in the online gaming realm of PlayStation 3 and 4. Complimented by an amazing single player experience, the online gameplay requires gamers to think strategically and throw away their old “run and gun” or “camp and snipe” morals. After your first match, you will be in charge of obtaining and sustaining supplies for a small survival population. With each game you play, you salvage what ever items you can and if there is not enough for everyone, your population will decrease. Each time you lose population, you get further away from earning new combat perks, weapons, gear, and emblems.

Loadout
With each loadout you are given a certain amount of points to spend on a primary weapon, secondary weapon, and five combat perks. Each perk and weapon costs points and will ultimately affect how strong your loadout is. After five to ten matches, you will have a decent amount of points to upgrade to a premium loadout. You are able to choose from different preset loadouts but these do not grant extra points when you’re maneuvering around the battlefield healing teammates and crafting items. I prefer to stay away from a primary weapon and to stick with the simple revolver which does not cost any points to equip. By sticking to a revolver, you are able to use the extra points for combat perks which grant the most points. The premium loadout for someone looking to obtain maximum points and maintain a healthy population would be Revolver (weapon) Crafter 3, Reviver 3 and First Aid Training 3. If you have gained enough loadout points then you should have an extra point — I would spend that on brawler or marathon runner.

Heals and Revives
While playing make sure to focus on being a medic to your fellow teammates. Assist others by focusing on reviving and healing your buddies. When a certain area is filled with enemies and they are taking down your teammates, remain passive and stay away from danger. Once the enemies have been taken care of, try to heal or revive your surviving teammates and extra points will be granted which will aid your population.

Gifting Items and Executions
With Crafter 3 equipped, a gift box will appear when you craft other items. These gift items should be given to teammates which will give you more points and increase your chances of your team winning the round. Always try and craft smoke bombs and shivs for yourself. Throw or set a smoke trap and wait for your enemy, and once they’re vulnerable, cut their throat from behind. If you are unable to shiv them but are still able to down them, make sure to execute them by pressing Triangle. Although executions seem fun and grant extra points, they can still leave you open to attack since you enter a quick time event. With this in mind, make sure to listen for nearby enemies first before going through with all executions.

Choosing the Right “Risk” Mission
As you progress through more rounds of multiplayer, you will be prompted with a warning which puts you at risk of losing 100% of your population if you do not choose from a list of missions and complete them. These missions require you to complete an objective in a certain timeframe and if you don’t, you will lose your population and have to start all over again. Choosing a  simple mission is crucial at this point. I suggest sticking with the healing teammates, crafting or spot enemies mission. These aren’t difficult to complete and will secure your points and future population.

Lastly, stay armored and stay protected. Remain close (but not too close) to your teammates and watch from afar and think of the round as a strategy and less of a battlefield. If you follow these simple rules, you will be able to customize and rule the battlefield with an iron fist — and a pretty awesome beret.
